SMTP error 535: Username and Password not accepted

#12 Closed
Kevin K. 105 days ago

I'm getting 535 5.7.8 Username and Password not accepted when I try to send a test campaign through my Gmail account. I'm positive I typed my password right.

This is almost always the same root cause as this earlier thread on connecting Gmail — if you have 2-Step Verification on (most accounts do by default now), Gmail rejects your normal account password for SMTP entirely and needs a 16-character App Password instead. Quick check: go to Google Account > Security > 2-Step Verification > App passwords, generate one, and use that in place of your regular password in Settings > Sending.

That fixed it, sending fine now. I didn't realize a regular password wouldn't work at all rather than just being wrong.
