Promotions

A promotion is one marketing push made of one-off emails: a launch announcement, a sale, a webinar invitation. Each email in a promotion is a separate, single message (its own list, its own send time, its own thread) and the promotion gathers their results in one place. Follow-up sequences are for campaigns.

Sending an email

Add an email to a promotion, choose the mailbox(es) and list(s), write the message, and pick Save as a draft, Send now or Schedule for a time. With several mailboxes the list is dealt out between them evenly and each mailbox sends its share.

By default a promotion email may go out outside the mailbox's usual sending hours — a flash deal shouldn't wait for morning. Each mailbox's daily limit, its small-batch pacing and its ramp-up still apply. Untick the box to keep the usual hours.

The sending plan

As you choose lists and mailboxes the form works out, in plain language, when the send will finish at the mailboxes' real limits (including any ramp-up), and warns you if it can't finish before an optional deadline.

How a big send is protected

Bulk sending to a big list is exactly what makes providers shut accounts down, so a promotion email is sent in stages:

  • A test batch of 50 goes out first. The rest is released about 30 minutes later, once bounces have had time to come back. The promotion page says “Test batch sent; the rest is released…” while it waits.
  • If more than 2% bounce, the email pauses and asks you whether the list is clean. Above 4% across the mailbox, everything on it pauses. See Bounce protection.
  • Bounced addresses are blocked in every campaign and promotion from then on.
  • A mailbox that is new (or restarted after a pause) builds its daily volume up gradually, so a huge list takes several days from it.

Run any large list through an email-verification service first, and send big lists from a mailbox that has been sending for a while. A fast send to an unverified list is the most common way to get an SES account paused.

Reading the results

The promotion page shows totals across all its emails — people reached, sent, opened, clicked, replied, bounced — and a row per email with its own numbers and any note about why it is waiting or paused.
